Our Story and Why we are Unique
Hot Tubs Galore is a rustic warehouse concept in a casual setting in the Port Kells area of Surrey. Simple, efficient and practical. Low bling, no schmooze. We are dealers for many brand names, and sell both new and used hot tubs so we have a huge selection to choose from.
We like to think of ourselves as catering to the more sensible, intelligent shopper. We tend to attract the kind of people who don’t want a slick a slick sales pitch and don’t need a fancy showroom – the kind of people who just want to make a wise decision based on accurate information.
We currently operate as a small family-run business, but it wasn’t always that way.
Here’s our story:
My name is Steve Anonby. During the 1990’s, I worked as a pastor at a multi-denominational church at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver then served as prison chaplain in Burnaby. It was during that time that I began to consider starting a hot tub business.
My family was in the market for a hot tub. I found that the more research I did to make an informed decision, the more confused I became by all of the conflicting information on what makes a hot tub “good”. I became so frustrated that I ended up putting the whole hot tub venture on hold indefinitely.
A while later, I befriended someone who happened to be a hot tub repairman. Being his friend gave me access to the kind of insider information on spas that isn’t readily available to the general consumer public.
He explained that since most consumers don’t know much about hot tubs, they usually make their choice based solely on advertising, cosmetics, price, and showroom sales pitch, and explained how each of those things can be very misleading. He helped me understand why certain hot tubs were overrated and overpriced while others were “hidden gems” and great deals.
Based on what he taught me, I was able to make an excellent choice for my family’s hot tub needs. Soon after, I used that knowledge and experience to help a friend of mine find a good deal on a high quality used hot tub because I knew what to look for.
It occurred to me that there was a gap in the marketplace that needed to be filled: helping people navigate through all the confusing marketing noise to find the right brand and model for their particular tastes, needs and budget. There’s plenty of information out there about cars and electronics, but very little accurate, credible information when it comes to rating and evaluating different hot tub brands & models.
I did lots of research, learned as much as I could from a couple friends and mentors who knew the business well, hunted down as much literature as I could on the subject, took a course on hot tub repair, then started a hot tub repair business.
My wife and child were very involved in the day-to-day running of the business. I also hired people more knowledgeable and experienced than myself to do much of the technical work, although I soon became quite good myself at hot tub repair, service and rebuilds. We would pick up used hot tubs off “Buy and Sell” (remember those days?), and refurbish them in order to resell them “all fixed up, with a warranty”.
It wasn’t long before we became well known in Vancouver as “BC Used Hot Tubs”.
Running a hot tub repair business and buying/refurbishing/reselling used hot tubs helped us understand and appreciate the importance of hot tub design, engineering, production techniques, materials, equipment and workmanship. We knew what mattered when it came to performance, reliability, durability and serviceability down the road.
We began selling new hot tubs as well, slowly adding more and more hot tub brand names to our repertoire.
BC Used Hot Tubs continued to grow steadily so we decided to create a big storefront place on Fraser Highway (All things Hot Tubs) to accommodate the continued growth. Then we started up another storefront location (Hot Tubs Galore) in downtown Langley. We also considered opening a store in Kelowna and Victoria.
To make a long story short, although the company was booming, these business ventures were too much work, too much administration, too much stress, and our family was not enjoying the hectic, busy lifestyle it created. During the 2010 Olympics, my wife and I made the bold decision to downsize and simplify to improve our quality of life.
We now run the business out of our home and display our hot tubs in a nearby rustic warehouse. Simple, efficient and low-key. Our low overhead allows us to sell hot tubs for less money than a typical retail store, and we have a more personal relationship with our clients.
We don’t make as many sales as back in the day but having “been there done that”, I can tell you that money isn’t everything, and having a good life is more important than being able to buy lots of stuff.
At Hot Tubs Galore, we love what we do. As a small family-run business, we take pride in our work and we find satisfaction in offering what we believe is a valuable service.
